Birding and Hiking

Antigua, Montserrat and St Lucia

This one is for those who want to see rare and endemic birds as well as some great hiking. It takes thirteen nights (fourteen days) in total with seven nights in Antigua (three at the start, two in the middle and two at the end), and three nights each in St. Lucia and Montserrat. We will take you up to Shirley Heights on your last day in Antigua and with fair weather you will be able to see all the islands you’ve been to at the same time!

Day 1

Soon after your international flight lands at Antigua’s new international airport terminal you will be met in arrivals by your Hike Caribbean representative and whisked away for your first night at the luxury Sugar Ridge Resort. Why not take a dip into one of our pools, then eat up in Carmichael’s restaurant watching the sunset across Montserrat and the Caribbean Sea?

Day 2

Take some time to unwind from your long flight and enjoy all Sugar Ridge has to offer. Exercise is a great cure for jet-lag, so you can work out in our multi-purpose gym or take one of our daily yoga classes. Alternatively, relax with a treatment in our Aveda Spa or take our complimentary shuttle to the beach. From your balcony you can spot the two native hummingbirds of the island as they flit from flower to flower.

Day 3

The first hike of your holiday! Your guide takes you out of Sugar Ridge soon after breakfast and through steep bush and forest where you will see signs of old plantation buildings and a variety of trees and plants which your guide will help you identify. Finally, towards the top you join a small tarmac road which leads up to the highest point on the island. You can peak through the trees and catch glimpses of the coastline and the interior of the island.

Day 4

Time to leave the luxury of Sugar Ridge for your early evening LIAT flight direct to Saint Lucia. Your transfer to Fondoux Plantation will take less than an hour where you will have time to settle into your new home for three nights.

Day 5

Your first full day in St Lucia and you will be hiking across the island with an opportunity to see lots of different bird species in different habitats. In particular you will get the chance to glimpse two of St Lucia’s endemic species which can only be seen on the island, the St Lucia Oriele and the St Lucia Warbler.

Day 6

Your second day hike in St Lucia and your aim is to spot the elusive and beautiful St Lucia parrot. Predominately green the parrot has striking cobalt blue features which flash through the jungle canopy. Although numbers have recovered since their nadir in the 1970’s when there were thought to be less than 150 birds on the islands they are still a rare sight but fear not there are hundreds of other species to be spotted as you hike through the foothill and peaks in the centre of the island.

Day 7

Today you get the opportunity to relax around Fondoux Plantation and take advantage of the beautiful gardens and pool. This will take up your morning and in the afternoon you will be leaving later in the day on a short LIAT flight of thirty minutes to Antigua in the late afternoon.

Day 8

Today we take you on a morning hike from Wallings Dam in the South-Western rainforest of the islands down through forest, then woodland and bush finally reaching the ocean at Rendezvous Bay close to Falmouth Harbour. After a dip in the sea or some sunbathing on the deserted beach you then hike back up to the Dam where you can have a go on the rainforest ziplines if you’re feeling brave!

Day 9

Up early for a transfer to Antigua airport and a short flight over to Montserrat with Fly Montserrat. The trip is so short you barely get above the clouds and a great opportunity to see the coasts of both islands or you may spot a shark or a whale in the ocean between the islands. We take you to see the Montserrat Volcano Observatory on the way to your accommodation at Olveston House.

Day 10

Today your guide arrives at Olveston House to take you on the Oriele walkway named after the endemic national bird of Montserrat. Although we don’t offer a guarantee that you will see the bird your guide James “Scriber” Daley can imitate its call perfectly so we are pretty sure some will come out to meet you!

Day 11

On your second day in Montserrat we will take you to different parts of the islands to hike and to get the opportunity to see more of the islands bird species by visiting different habitats such as the drier East cost of the island, the central hills cloud forest and the coastal stretches on the West and North of the island.

Day 12

Before leaving Montserrat in the afternoon we take you over to the old capital Portsmouth which was destroyed in the recent volcanic eruptions. You can walk the deserted streets and see the houses buried in volcanic ash and mud. After your short flight back to Antigua you are welcomed home by your Sugar Ridge friends and back to your villa.

Day 13

Your final full day in Antigua and in the afternoon, we take you on a guided hike of the historic English Harbour area, including a short boat ferry across the bay to Pigeon beach. From here you will hike up to Shirley Heights to see the sunset and maybe enjoy a well-earned rum punch at the bar with its amazing views of the harbour and the coastline.

Day 14

Time to say goodbye. We transfer you back to the international terminal for your flight home though we suggest you have a quick dip in the pool at Sugar Ridge and a soak up the last drops of Caribbean sunshine before you make your way!
