Colonial History and Hiking

Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis

The focus of this tour is colonial history as Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis are all stepped in history which is reflected in our choice of hikes. There is flexibility to add in some more challenging hikes but the purpose of this tour is to give you a real insight into the history and culture of the islands. Given the proximity of Saint Kitts and Nevis to one another it makes sense to combine them together in one trip from Antigua. Though having lots of similarities there are interesting differences between the islands and from a hiking perspective Nevis peak is a much harder and quicker climb compared to the longer trek up Mount Liamuiga. The trip lasts a total of eleven nights (twelve days) with three nights in Saint Kitts, two in Nevis and three either side in Antigua.

Day 1

Soon after your international flight lands at Antigua’s new international airport terminal you will be met in arrivals by your Hike Caribbean representative and whisked away for your first night at the luxury Sugar Ridge Resort. Why not take a dip into one of our pools, then eat up in Carmichael’s restaurant watching the sunset across Montserrat and the Caribbean Sea?

Day 2

Take some time to unwind from your long flight and enjoy all Sugar Ridge has to offer. Exercise is a great cure for jet-lag, so you can work out in our multi-purpose gym or take one of our daily yoga classes. Alternatively, relax with a treatment in our Aveda Spa or take our complimentary shuttle to the beach.

Day 3

The first hike of your holiday! Your guide takes you out of Sugar Ridge soon after breakfast and through steep bush and forest where you will see signs of old plantation buildings and a variety of trees and plants which your guide will help you identify. Finally, towards the top you join a small tarmac road which leads up to the highest point on the island. You can peak through the trees and catch glimpses of the coastline and the interior of the island.

Day 4

Time to leave the luxury of Sugar Ridge for your late morning LIAT flight direct to St Kitts. Your transfer to Belle Mont Farm will take less than an hour which will give you plenty of time to settle into your new surroundings.

Day 5

Your first day in Saint Kitts and Nevis you will be hiking around the historic Brimstone Hill Fortress. This historic fort is a Unesco World Heritage site and our tour will enable you to see the fort itself along with the surroundings area to get an understanding of its history. You will return in plenty of time to relax and soak your tired limbs in the pool at Belle Mont Farm.

Day 6

On your second day you will be taken on a “Pirates of St Kitts Island Tour” which will enable you to see different sides to the island and the part they have played in the islands pirate history. There will also be the opportunity to walk in different areas, such as the South East and the Olivees Range and experience the different flora and fauna on those parts of the islands.

Day 7

You leave Belle Mont Farm after breakfast in time to catch the midday ferry from Basseterre across to Nevis. This gives you plenty of time when you arrive on the island to relax at Montpellier Plantation and appreciate its historical routes.

Day 8

Your guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast and take you on a leisurely hike within Hamilton Estate, an Eighteenth-century sugar plantation, that ceased operation in 1951. While we wander the old estate grounds you can imagine what it was like to live back then. Stroll along the part of the Upper Round Trail that traverses this grand estate and learn about the indigenous plants with healing powers native to the area. Also enjoy the panoramic views of St. Christopher (St. Kitts), Charlestown and Nevis Peak in the background.

Day 9

Your flight back to Antigua doesn’t leave till early evening so this gives you another full day to enjoy all that Nevis has to offer. Our walking tour of the capital Charlestown gives you the opportunity to visit its historic museums and understand its culture and history before some time to relax in the beautiful surroundings of Montpellier Plantation. On returning to Antigua in the afternoon we will whisk you back to your villa in Sugar Ridge.

Day 10

A day to unwind a relax sore limbs after the hiking of the last few days. We recommend a treatment in the spa or some time at the beach!

Day 11

Your final full day in Antigua and in the afternoon, we take you on a guided hike of the historic English Harbour area, including a short boat ferry across the bay to Pigeon beach. From here you will hike up to Shirley Heights to see the sunset and maybe enjoy a well-earned rum punch at the bar with its amazing views of the harbour and the coastline.

Day 12

Time to say goodbye. We transfer you back to the international terminal for your flight home though we suggest you have a quick dip in the pool at Sugar Ridge and a soak up the last drops of Caribbean sunshine before you make your way!
